Gum disease is when the bone around your tooth dissolves away. The bone around a tooth is the thing that holds your tooth in place in your jaw. If you lose too much, the tooth can move, drift and eventually fall out. It is often an irreversible process, and so we like to catch it, and treat it quickly.
It is a largely painless and symptomless disease. You may experience bleeding or sore gums. And the gums may appear to be receding. In its early stages, only your dentist or hygienist may pick it up. And so it’s important to get regular checks.
It is caused by bacteria that live in the gum pocket between the tooth and gum. The more progressed the gum disease, the deeper the pocket gets, which leads to bone loss.
The bacteria comes from the plaque in your mouth, so it’s important to brush well twice a day to prevent problems. Our team can show you the best way to do this.
